MEMBERS1st Breaks Ground on Marshalltown Branch

May 31, 2023: MEMBERS1st Community Credit Union broke ground this morning on the credit union’s newest branch being constructed in central Marshalltown, adjacent to the community’s Fareway store.

“This is an exciting day for MEMBERS1st,” said CEO Nick Tonelli. “This event represents our commitment to the community of Marshalltown and our membership,” said CEO Nick Tonelli.

Planned to open in the spring of 2024, the 10,000-square-foot full-service branch and administrative facility will utilize state-of the-art technologies to deliver in-person banking services including biometric access to safe deposit boxes and Interactive Teller Machines for self-service or assisted cash services. The new administrative center will enable the credit union to enlarge its phone, digital and video banking services, including offering expanded support for its Spanish-speaking members. A gathering space will be utilized for lunch-and-learn events and classes related to consumer topics and financial wellness.

“As a not-for-profit financial cooperative utilizing state-of-the-art technology, our team members will be able to focus on what’s most important – the financial well-being and financial goals of our membership.”

In addition to the credit union’s new CEO Nick Tonelli, also participating in groundbreaking were recently retired MEMBERS1st CEO Janet Borer, Board President Tami Lichtenberg, past and present Board Members, most of the Marshalltown area MEMBERS1st team members, and key representative from the Iowa Credit Union League and community of Marshalltown.

“This isn’t just a building for MEMBERS1st,” said Board President Tami Lichtenberg.  This is a commitment to the future, prosperity, and financial freedom of this community, and all of the communities we serve.  We are here for you, because of you, and we are so happy to see all of the planning and dreaming become reality.”

“It is my pleasure to be a part of the vision and future of MEMBERS1st Community Credit Union and our mission of financially empowering central Iowa,” said Tonelli.

MEMBERS1st opened its doors in Marshalltown as Fisher Credit Union in 1964 and continued as Central Iowa Credit Union, before becoming MEMBERS1st. Through mergers with other home-grown credit unions, its service area has expanded to 14 central Iowa counties with branches in Traer, Ames, Iowa Falls, Eldora, Boone and Marshalltown. In 2019, MEMBERS1st opened a branch inside the JBS plant in Marshalltown to offer on-site financial services and education to the workforce of one of the community’s largest employers. Additionally, MEMBERS1st has begun an in-depth process to assess and address the specific needs of the Hispanic community to provide the best service experience to this growing population.

Thirty staff will work at the new location. It will include a full-service branch, drive-thru services, administrative space, a member contact center and a community meeting space. Tenant space will allow for the introduction of complimentary services to credit union members. The 104 West Anson building was designed by the La Macchia Group LLC, Milwaukee, Wis.

We will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 1 for New Year's Day.
